Austin and Dallas are among 20 North American metropolitan areas being considered for a second headquarters for Amazon, the online retail giant announced Thursday morning.

The cities were among several in Texas that had been competing to lure the company. Competition among cities has been fierce, since Amazon says it plans to invest $5 billion on its new headquarters and create "as many as 50,000 high-paying jobs" in the city it picks.

Judith A. Canales of Eagle Pass recently attended the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Annual Conference held June 21-24, 2017 in Dallas, Texas.  Also attending was Eagle Pass City Councilman Luis Sifuentes.  NALEO is the membership organization of Latino elected and appointed officials and represents the largest convening of these officials in the United States.

DALLAS (AP) — Thousands of people marched and rallied in downtown Dallas on Sunday to call for an overhaul of the nation's immigration system and end to what organizers said is an aggressive deportation policy.

DALLAS (AP) — The blood stains have been removed. So has most of the debris. But some remnants of the blast that ended Micah Johnson's deadly police ambush in Dallas remain at El Centro College: a wall and door frame blown back several feet, and wires and metal dangling from a ceiling with no tiles.

Officials at the downtown community college on Tuesday showed reporters the damage left after Dallas police deployed a remote-controlled robot with about 1 pound of the explosive C4, set it off and killed Johnson early on July 8.

Eagle Pass Police Chief Alberto Guajardo shared his perspective on the tragic shootings that took place at a peaceful protest in Dallas, Tx. over the recent videotaped shootings of black men by police. The protest turned violent Thursday night as Micah Xavier Johnson shot at officers, killing five and injuring seven, as well as two civilians. 

"Police officers who were there to serve and protect were essentially assassinated by a gunman. The suspect shot at these officers with an assault rifle with the direct intention to kill police." stated Guajardo.

"People have the right to protest and demand answers, but to intentionally take a police officer's life is unacceptable. This is true for any person, but these officers were simply doing their jobs, a profession that they chose for their lives."

According to Chief Guajardo, "99% of our officials in our nation and out state are very good professionals that are dedicated to their work and families. Unfortunetley what transpired in Dallas puts us all on high alert." 

"I made contact with all our patrolmen, investigators and police officials after the incident to make clear that any incidents that involve threats to police officers will be taken very seriously.We take these cases very seriously, to the point where we will contact FBI and state investigators to look into matters like these." said Guajardo.

"Our officials do their duties with professionalism and have a very difficult job to do. I pray for our officials every day for them to return safely to their families." 

Jefe Guajardo comenta sobre tiroteo en Dallas

El jefe de policía de Eagle Pass Alberto Guajardo compartió su perspectiva sobre los tiroteos que tomaron lugar en una protesta pacífica en Dallas, Tx. La protesta se volvió violenta  el jueves por la noche cuando Micah Xavier Johnson disparó contra los agentes, matando a cinco personas e hiriendo a siete, así como dos civiles.

"Los agentes de policía que estaban allí para servir y proteger fueron asesinados por un hombre armado.  El disparó hacia estos agentes con un rifle de asalto con la intención directa de matar a la policía." Guajardo indicó.

"La gente tiene derecho a protestar y exigir respuestas, pero para tomar intencionalmente la vida de un agente de policía es inaceptable. Esto es cierto para cualquier persona, pero estos oficiales estaban simplemente haciendo su trabajo, una profesión que eligieron."

Según el Jefe Guajardo, "el 99% de nuestros agentes en nuestro país y del estado son muy buenos profesionales que se dedican a su trabajo y familias. Desafortunadamente lo que ocurrió en Dallas nos pone a todos en alerta máxima."

"Tan pronto que escuchaba las noticias me puse en contacto con todos nuestros patrulleros, investigadores y tenientes después del incidente para dejar claro que los incidentes que implican amenazas a los agentes de policía serán tomadas muy en serio. Voy a tomar estos casos hasta el punto en que nos pondremos en contacto con el FBI y los investigadores del estado que examine cuestiones como éstas ". dijo Guajardo.

"Nuestros agentes hacen sus funciones con profesionalismo y tienen un trabajo muy difícil de hacer. Yo oro por nuestros agentes todos los días para que  regresen seguros con sus familias."
