Eagle Pass Housing Authority is bracing for possible funding cuts from the Federal Government in the near future.
The Eagle Pass Housing Authority Board of Commissioners held a meeting on Thursday December 21, 2017 in which issues regarding funding cuts being proposed by the federal government were discussed.
Board President Ana Gonzalez brought up some of the issues during the agencies monthly departmental reports. “We’re in a bind. And we still don’t know what the President is going to come up with next month. We already know they’re is going to be cuts. How much? What percentage we don’t know. So this is something that we really need to take a hard look at.
Gonzalez explained that the organization was going to have to be very frugal with funds to save up and assure that whatever cuts are coming don’t affect the agency in a hard way.
“There are going to be cuts so you are all going to have to work with what they give you.” added Gonzalez.
Gonzalez detailed that if the cuts are significant that the Housing Authority could possibly even have to consider eradicating employment positions.
Gonzalez, the Board of Commissioners and administration went through certain details as to what would be required from the local housing authority to continue its operations if any significant cuts or stoppage of funding were to occur under the Trump Administration.
On May 23, 2017, the White House released its Fiscal Year 1208 budget. The budget includes steep cuts in funding for affordable housing programs, totaling $6.8 billion in cuts to Housing Urban Development (HUD) programs from actual Fiscal Year 2017 funding levels.
Up to this point the cuts are still in the works and could possibly even grow affecting millions of individuals including in Eagle Pass.
