The South Texas Food Bank mission is to feed the hungry. With more than 30 percent of South Texas residents living below the poverty guidelines, the hungry are plentiful. And equally important as the mission to feed the hungry is to bring awareness that hungry people exist in our own backyard. “If you or I have never been hungry, it’s sometimes hard to convince others that there are hungry in our community,” says a South Texas Food Bank spokesperson. Bringing the hunger issue to the forefront via documentation is key. Three South Texas Food Bank employees were recognized at the monthly board meeting at Commerce Bank by Feeding America and the Texas Department of Health and Human Resources for their role in gathering information to support that there is food insecurity among our residents.

The latest meeting of Commissioner's Court happened to make history due to the fact that for the first time, a woman sat on the court, as Daniela Flores-Aleman now takes former Commissioner Rodolfo Heredia's place and Javier Libson sat in former Commissioner Eliaz Maldonado's chair. The two were appointed by visiting District Judge Dick Alcala earlier in the day after the petition to suspend both Heredia and Maldonado was upheld after much litigation in the Old Maverick County Courthouse.

The CC Winn Mavericks have a new head football coach as of the last meeting of the EPISD Board of Trustees on Tuesday. Eric Villaseñor was approved as the man entrusted with the Silver & Black Attack Football Program and the school, the student body, staff and the fans of the Mavericks are excited at the prospect.
Villaseñor outlasted an impressive group of applicants from across South Texas to land the opportunity to follow in his father's footsteps early in his coaching career.
"I'm excited to come aboard and I expect to hit the ground running to put CC WInn High School on the map," stated an enthusiastic Villaseñor on his first day on the job at Winn HIgh, "I want every stakeholder in the program to embrace change, change is positive."
When asked about the process which lead to his new coaching position, he said that he had discussed the issue with his colleagues, "It's like preparing for a game, if you're prepared for anything that comes to you, you have the best chance to win, and in this case, thank God, I came out on top."
The former Offensive Coordinator at Eagle Pass is a second generation head football coach as his father Oki, the present Head Coach at LBJ, has already sent his best wishes even if he will be trying to outdo his son come next season at least for one week, "He's real happy and proud, it goes without saying."
Coach Villaseñor inherits a program which has been steadily improving in all facets of the game, from the junior high level through Freshman, JV and a sound returning crop of varsity players.
"What we want to achieve at Winn is a clear direction in terms of discipline and being able to combine athletics with academics."
The Eagle Pass News Gram salutes Eric Villaseñor on his latest accomplishment and wishes him the best in his new athletic endeavor.
