Border Patrol officers rescued a 17 year-old woman who was trapped in the middle of the Rio Grande hanging on for life from an island in the middle of the river adjacent to International Bridge II.
Dennis Smith, spokesman for the US Border Patrol, informed The News Gram that the woman was at risk of being carried away by the current and with the cold weather she was in serious danger.
According to the report, the woman had used an inner tube to cross but she lost hold of the device and was able to hold on to some foliage which kept her from being swept away.
She was taken from the river and transported to the Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center.
Border patrol agents stated that she is of Honduran descent and she recovered from her injuries.
They are in the process of contacting the Honduran Consulate to be able to deport her.
According to the border patrol they have conducted seven such rescues of illegal immigrants in danger.

County Attorney Ricardo Ramos has filed a petition in District Court which, if honored, would call for the removal of County Commissioners Eliaz Maldonado and Rudy Heredia who both are facing federal charges at this time.
The petition was filed on December 28th in the 293rd District Court before The Honorable Cynthia Muñiz-Berain, but no date has been set, nor has a formal decision been handed down.
Commissioner Heredia is presently being detained in a federal jail awaiting his date in court on charges of conspiracy to illegally import $13,000.00 into the United States.
Maldonado faces six counts which include misuse of federal funds, and for his alleged participation in a kickback and bribery scheme with local contractors. He voluntarily turned himself over to federal authorities and was given the opportunity to post bail. He was sworn in on January 1st after winning his re-election bid last year.
