Lieutenant Moses Peña informed The News Gram that the present 'Back to School' operative which is in place as the EPISD welcomes back 15,000 students to their respective schools is going well as no infractions of any major significance were reported on Day 1. Mr. Peña also mentioned the fact that the EPPD and the EPISD Police Department is working in conjunction in order to secure areas around the school zones and insure the safety of all of our students. He mentioned that officers will be in these areas monitoring motorists rates of speeds as the speed limit is 20 MPH, however they will also be enforcing the no cell phone laws to see if anyone is using their phones and/or texting when crossing school zones. They remind parents to get an early start in order to avoid being in a hurry to drop-off or pick up your child from school in order to deter the risk of accidents. Peña concluded that there were no automobile accidents reported on the first day of classes and their normal traffic squadron of two units and two motorcycle officers is reducing the number of traffic infractions, and while the ramped-up 'Back to School' operation may only last two weeks, the traffic squadron will remain in place permanently.
