The City of Eagle Pass celebrated the 49 year anniversary of Earth Day on Friday, April 26, 2019, contributing to the environment by planting numerous trees at the new city park on Garrison

The event was hosted by Eagle Pass Mayor Ramsey E. Cantu and the City of Eagle Pass Parks & Recreation Department and featured an Earth Day message on protecting our species and proclamation on the importance of giving back to Mother Earth.

This year’s Earth Day’s theme focuses on how climate change, and other human demands, are contributing to the decline in the number of many species. During the event, the Robert E. Lee Elementary Student Council, EPISD Superintendent’s Advisory Committee and Spirit Ambassadors, and Mayor Cantu shared important information and an Earth Day message during the ceremony. A crepe myrtle tree and a red oak tree were planted in a sign of giving back to the Earth.

Back In 1908 U.S. President, Theodore Roosevelt said that people without children would face a hopeless future and a country without trees is almost as hopeless. He wanted the children, and their children to become the earth's trustees. Today our generation has become the earth's trustees.

During this day we shall reflect on the importance of giving back to the environment in any way possible.

Commissioner Ruiz meets with Piedras Mayor to discuss third bridge plans http://thenewsgramonline.dyndns.org:81/index.php/latest/item/9678-commissioner-ruiz-meets-with-piedras-mayor-to-discuss-third-bridge-plans http://thenewsgramonline.dyndns.org:81/index.php/latest/item/9678-commissioner-ruiz-meets-with-piedras-mayor-to-discuss-third-bridge-plans Commissioner Ruiz meets with Piedras Mayor to discuss third bridge plans

Maverick County officials continue exploring the possibilities of the future construction of a third International Bridge.

Maverick County officials, including Pct. 4 Commissioner Roberto Ruiz, met with Piedras Negras, Coahuila Mayor Claudio Bres to discuss the county's vision to establish the necessary plans and studies that would eventually develop into the building of a third international bridge system in Maverick County.

During the meeting, certain details were discussed as to what is needed to make such a vision a reality.

Commissioner Ruiz did ask Mayor Bres to bring up the idea with Mexican President Manuel Lopez Obrador, who is scheduled to visit Piedras Negras in the near future.

Maverick County has been looking into the possibilities of setting forth the necessary plans for the third bridge in Maverick County since 2014.

Back on December 11, 2017, the county approved a Port of Entry Feasibility study which since then has been completed.

The County is seeking for this third bridge to be placed outside in the county to be able to generate income such as in the case of the City of Eagle Pass International Bridges that create up to 50% of the city’s budgetary revenues.

If the County could open up such an operation, the revenues potentially created from it one day could assist it to fund county public services and allow the county flexibility with other revenues. These revenues would be available for street pavings and other needed public projects.

The City has expressed interest in looking at this third bridge option as well.

Another issue being taken on by city officials at this time is looking to work out a deal with the federal government to begin opening up international bridge No. 1 up to 24 hours a day, since it closes at 11:30 pm as of now.

TxDOT holds Texas-Mexico Border Transportation Master Plan stakeholder workshop http://thenewsgramonline.dyndns.org:81/index.php/latest/item/9676-txdot-holds-texas-mexico-border-transportation-master-plan-stakeholder-workshop http://thenewsgramonline.dyndns.org:81/index.php/latest/item/9676-txdot-holds-texas-mexico-border-transportation-master-plan-stakeholder-workshop TxDOT holds Texas-Mexico Border Transportation Master Plan stakeholder workshop

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) held a Texas-Mexico Border Transportation Master Plan stakeholder workshop in Eagle Pass on Wednesday, April 24, 2019.

The workshop emphasized the important role that transportation infrastructure in Texas plays in facilitating the nation’s trade with Mexico.

During the event stakeholders from around the region and state discussed many issues related to the subject, which included the current and projected travel demand, improving the capacity and operations of the existing multi-modal infrastructure and how it's critical to alleviating traffic congestion, facilitate international trade, reduce environmental impacts, and improve the quality of life for residents in the border region.

TxDOT, in collaboration and partnership with the Border Trade Advisory Committee, is working with U.S. and Mexican agencies and stakeholders to develop the Border Transportation Master Plan (BTMP). The master plan will identify the cross-border challenges of moving people and goods and will include analysis of existing transportation systems--roadway, transit, pedestrian, pipeline, airport, maritime, and rail. The plan will analyze current and future transportation and will include a prioritized list of transportation investment strategies that support bi-national, state, regional, and local economic competitiveness and improve the impacts of cross-border trade and transportation.

(TxDOT) is hosting a series of stakeholder workshops throughout the border region related to its master plan efforts.

Those participating in the workshop included bi national, public and private sector stakeholders, brokers and logistics firms, cargo owners, and other trade transportation industry professionals.

The main purposes for the collaboration efforts include to facilitate coordination and collaboration between Texas and Mexico on bi-national planning, programming, and the implementation of policies, programs, and projects (a) at border crossings and (b) support the facilities and the multi-modal transportation system that serves the Texas-Mexico border.

The master plan’s goals are to serve as a blueprint for bi-national policy, program, and project recommendations that meet federal and state requirements. The objectives include conducting a bi-national analysis of the existing transportation systems (roadway, transit, pedestrian, pipeline and rail, etc.) and analyzing of current and future transportation needs, as well as developing an extensive and collaborative bi-national public and private-sector.

Stakeholder engagement. Assess all ports-of-entry (POE) support facilities that facilitate the cross-border movement of people and goods.

The Texas border with Mexico extends for 1,255 miles - or 64 percent of the total U.S.-Mexico border - and ranks first among U.S. trading with Mexico, with 33 percent of the total truck and rail trade.

ln 2017, Texas traded approximately $187.5 billion with Mexico, more than three times the amount that Texas trades with China, the state’s second-largest trading partner.

Texas’ 2017 exports to Mexico amounted to approximately $97.7 billion and Texas’ imports from Mexico amounted to approximately $89.8 billion.

Walmart to open in Piedras Negras could hurt U.S. local economy http://thenewsgramonline.dyndns.org:81/index.php/latest/item/9667-walmart-to-open-in-piedras-negras-could-hurt-u-s-local-economy http://thenewsgramonline.dyndns.org:81/index.php/latest/item/9667-walmart-to-open-in-piedras-negras-could-hurt-u-s-local-economy

Piedras Negras Mayor Claudio Mario Bres Garza announced that the arrival of Walmart

to his community is close to becoming a reality. Mayor Garza explained that the commercial Super Center would be similar to the Eagle Pass retail storefront. “We are waiting for them to be here in the coming days, as they seek to receive a construction license," said Bres Garza.

The retail facility would be located in an area facility formerly occupied by Merco at Plaza Fiesta Bomer.

The project is expected to begin construction and possibly open by the beginning of 2020.

Locally, the opening of a Walmart across the border could negatively affect overall sales and business not just at our local Walmart store but in many other places as well. This would be in part due to the amount of potential commercial traffic that would be lost due to the potential opening of the Super Center in Piedras Negras.

Only time will tell what type of negative affect this opening will have to the local Eagle Pass economy.

Walmart currently owns and operated 7,895 stores across the world. Of those 5,537 or 70% of them are in the United States and 2,358 or 29% of them are in Mexico.
