WIC Director Lupita Fuentes and staff welcomed all in attendance and emphasized the importance of endorsing breastfeeding as the best way of feeding infants.
Fuentes and her staff also spoke about certain topics in relation to the WIC program, which serves over 650 breastfeeding mother's at this time.
Eagle Pass City Councilwoman Yolanda Ramon joined the celebration and presented Fuentes and the WIC employees with an official City Proclamation in celebration and awareness of National Breastfeeding Month.
“The benefits of breastfeeding improves the survival, health and development of all children,”said Ramon. "It saves women’s lives and ultimately is the cornerstone of a child’s healthy growth into adolescent and later into adulthood.” Fuentes proceeded to accept the city proclamation being presented during this very important day for the WIC program. Pediatric Dentist Dr. Norma Ruano spoke of the importance of dentistry and children's health.
Fuentes presented different testimonies from mothers who care for their children through breastfeeding and its health benefits.
The WIC Program in Maverick County serves up to 4,600 women and children per month.
