Representatives, including Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber, met on Monday, July 22, 2019, to collaborate and share information related to border security along the southwest border.
Sheriff Schmerber stated one of the main topics discussed was an increase of undocumented illegal trafficking along unpopulated areas between Eagle Pass and Del Rio, which includes Kinney County.
The group discussed important information related to the immigration surge and how the federal government and state agencies are trying to keep up and deal with all illicit activities.
“They stated that there is an increase of undocumented immigrant traffic through these unpopulated areas,” said Sheriff Tom Schmerber.
Schmerber stated that according to the U.S. Border Patrol, undocumented immigrant arrest - especially through those areas - have increased, but confiscation of drugs has decreased.
Collaborative efforts with all stakeholders involved are set to continue with each agency playing a distinctive role.
