Back in 2018, Cody was struggling and dealing with weight and self-esteem issues, and other problems that arise from such situations.
In December, Cody and his dad walked through the Eagle Pass Youth Center and he has not looked back. Cody met EPYC Director Alfonso Mallen, who offered him - like so many local youths - an opportunity to be proactive, and a second home.
Cody began to train under the Youth Center boxing program and after trials and tribulations, including dealing with his weight problem and battling asthma, has lost over 40 lbs.
Cody states that his motivation comes from wanting to change his young life around.
“I got tired of being overweight and being seen as different. And I’m glad my parents pushed me to come to the youth center. Mr. Mallen has helped me through so much. He is not just the director but a friend. I fell in love with boxing and continue trying to reach my goals,” said Cody. “To anyone who is dealing with weight problems or bullying and other issues, I say stay focused and you can achieve your dreams.”
Mr. Mallen states that he is proud of what Cody and so many other youths have accomplished at the Youth Center.
“It’s in them. I only offer certain tools to accomplish, first of all, happiness, motivation, increased self-esteem and a chance at being a productive member in our community,” said Mallen.
Cody at one point in his life was bullied by his peers and eventually used that as motivation to find his selfesteem and push through to achieve what his heart desired.
“I do say to anyone that is being bullied to not listen and use it as motivation to move forward and find your dreams and go and accomplish them,” added Cody. “To anyone who is bullying others, please just stop. There is nothing you accomplish by trying to make others feel bad about themselves.”
