Over 400 people attended the informative event which provided details over the current humanitarian/illegal crossings' crisis being seen along the U.S. southwest border.
During the event the Del Rio Sector Honor Guard performed the presentation of colors followed by Jessica Cavazos singing the National Anthem.
The event's invocation was given by Pastor Shon Young. Chief Ortiz proceeded to give his State of the Border , which covered multiple items regarding the agency’s current state.
Ortiz presented crucial informational statistics related to the immigration surge the Del Rio Sector is dealing with; including 25,085 family units apprehended during this fiscal year.
“During this time we have had 2,109 individuals who have been charged with a felony through Border Patrol.
We have performed 423 rescues, have seen 22 deaths and 77 Failure to Yield incidents,” said Ortiz.
Ortiz added that agents have encountered at least 53 different types of nationalities during this fiscal year.
The Sector has also apprehended 28 sex offenders duringthis fiscal year.
Ortiz added that the Del Rio Sector Border Patrol has caught approximately 23 fraudulent cases in which people have falsified a variety of claims.
“They do this to try to circumvent the loopholes that exist which we know can only be fixed through Congressional legislative action.” added Ortiz.
Ortiz spoke of the criminal element introduced into the moving of undocumented immigrants and how operational control can prevent illicit activities and other problems being experienced during this crisis.
