During the Eagle Pass City Council meeting held on July 5, 2019, the council consulted with their attorney on where the matter and current negotiations stand.
After reconvening into open session the council instructed their attorney to continue negotiations.
At this point in time, it's unclear as to what the details of the ongoing negotiations consist of, besides the City wanting to obtain the Alamo Lumber Property and U.P. looking for the city to eliminate at least two street areas that cross their railroad line in the downtown area.
Only time will tell if the ongoing deal comes through or falls apart.
This property has been the topic of numerous conversations between both entities in the past years.
Currently, the city is trying to figure in this parcel of land in a deal with Union Pacific tied to the possible street closures that Union Pacific seeks to get the city government to commit to.
Negotiations between both entities have been going on since the latter part of 2018. The parties have not been able to come to terms on an agreement that would be beneficial for both.
Community members have complained that the street closures would cut off access to the downtown area and create a traffic nightmare at the entry point to both overpasses. The City has conducted studies that show otherwise.
