The EPISD Board held a special meeting on Monday, June 24, 2019, at the new District’s Service Center facility in which they interviewed candidates for the Superintendent position.
The Board is scheduled to meet today at 6:00 pm in which they will name a lone finalist for the Superintendent position.
The Eagle Pass Independent School District Board of Trustees are looking to replace acting Superintendent Gilbert Gonzalez who announced in the month of May that he would retire as of August 31, 2019.
Back in May, Gonzalez announced publicly that he would be retiring from the EPISD as of August 31, 2019, after more than 37 years of working in the educational field.
“ I have just informed the Board that I intend to retire as of August 31, 2019, which is around the corner. I do want to thank the Board for all that they have done for me. I feel very fortunate to have worked with a Board as good as this Board. I respect all of you and your support. I will submit my formal letter this Friday.
Again, I thank you for all that you have done for me,” stated Gonzalez. Mr. Gonzalez has been at the helm of the EPISD as Superintendent since March 2012.
In previous years, Superintendent Gonzalez has received favorable evaluations by School Board Trustees who have expressed confidence in his leadership and the direction the EPISD has been on since his hiring.
The School District and students will truly miss his leadership and notebook of quotes.
It’s unknown how many of the 20 candidates that are said to have applied are from Eagle Pass. With that in mind, the probabilities that the position will be awarded to someone who is already working with the district is very likely, since it's incredulous that the school district's board of directors will be hiring an individual to the city's most important position in such short time and in one look at applications and some interviews.
Individuals familiar with the process state that it's highly probable that the lone candidate has already been designated.
