Eagle Pass Mayor Ramsey E. Cantu and city officials presented the city’s new ordinance on Thursday, June 13, 2019.
Mayor Cantu addressed the importance of setting such ordinances in place and also assuring that they are properly enforced with the transferring of the City’s Code
Enforcement Department to its Police Department. The new transfer will allow for the city to push a better effort in enforcing numerous ordinances that promote the safety and beautification of the community.
City Officials presented vital components to the new ordinance, which will require a collaborative effort by all in order to implement it with the least hiccups as possible.
“This is a top priority,” said Cantu. “This ordinance will also help businesses and residents understand how to properly dispose of old tires so as to not to encourage additional illegal dumping.”
“Through this ordinance and everyone’s efforts, residents will now have the opportunity to properly dispose of their unwanted tires,” stated City Manager George Antuna.
The city will begin a cleanup effort campaign to start on Monday, June 24, where city residents will be able to drop off their unwanted tires at the City’s Recycling Center (1100 Eidson Rd.) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Proof of residency within city limits will be required and up to 4 tires will be taken at no cost to the individual.
The campaign will continue on June 29 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 pm. After that, tires will be taken every third Saturday of the month from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The city will continue its educational campaign up until August 1st, when the ordinance will go into full effect.
Business owners dealing with the sale and replacement of tires will also be receiving notifications and information regarding the newly approved tire ordinance and how it will involve them and the fees they may charge to properly dispose of tires collected.
The city has also structured penalties for violations for businesses and private citizens which will go from not less than $100 and not more than $2,000 depending on the number of violations you have had.
