Eagle Pass Independent School District Superintendent Gilbert Gonzalez announced publicly that he will be retiring from the EPISD as of August 31, 2019.

Gonzalez made the announcement at the Eagle Pass Independent School District Board of Trustees meeting held on Tuesday, May 14, 2019.

“I have just informed the Board that I intend to retire as of August 31, 2019, which is around the corner. I do want to thank the Board for all that they have done for me. I feel very fortunate to have worked with a Board as good as this Board. I respect all of you and your support. I will submit my formal letter this Friday. Again, I thank you for all that you have done for me,” stated Gonzalez.

EPISD Board President Jorge Barrera thanked Superintendent Gonzalez for his dedication and service to the Community.

“Thank you, Mr. Gonzalez, I know you will be missed. It’s kind of a surprise to everybody and I can see it in everyone’s faces still. You will be missed and thank you for all the years that you had with the district, not just as the Superintendent but the district as a whole,” said Barrera.

Board Trustee Hector Alvarez addressed Mr. Gonzalez’s announcement. “This District has grown so much under your leadership. You always say that you have a good Board but you are the one that fights for the district. We have been blessed to have lived it and having worked alongside you. Definitely, this district is going to miss you.

On May 15, 2019, Mr. Gonzalez held a press conference officially announcing his retirement to the public and thanked all the students, parents, staff and administration for everything they have done for him during his time with the EPISD (Eagle Pass Independent School District).

Mr. Gonzalez has worked at the EPISD for 38 years and has been at the helm of the EPISD as Superintendent since March 2012.

His contract with the EPISD is set to expire in September.

Gonzalez’s contract as Superintendent began in 2012 and was extended another year back in 2015 after receiving a positive evaluation from the EPISD Board of Trustees. The original contract agreement was scheduled to end in 2018 and was extended to September of 2019.

In previous years, Superintendent Gonzalez has received favorable evaluations by School Board Trustees who have expressed confidence in his leadership and the direction the EPISD has been on since his hiring.

The School District and students will truly miss his leadership and notebook of quotes.
