Reports state that numerous individuals complained that they had received text messages and phone calls from someone pretending to be Father Lawrence, from the Sacred Heart Church located on Williams Street.
The individual(s) were asking for money to supposedly help children in need. However, the church clarified that it does not make this type of calls and asks the community to be careful about such fraudulent scams.
It's reported that the scammers were requesting that the people they contacted purchase online gift cards and then send them a photograph via text of the cards code numbers. One of the numbers from which messages or calls have been sent is 830-310-6658. The number is what's known as a Ghost Number, often used by Scammers looking to steal money or personal information from vulnerable individuals.
The scam was discovered when several people went to the church to drop off their donation gift cards.
