Saturday, May 11, 2019, marks the 27th annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive across the country when letter carriers and post offices will accept donations of non-perishable food items for those in need.

The Eagle Pass City Council recognized the Post Carriers efforts during their meeting, held on Tuesday, May, 7, in which they presented the National Association of Letter Carrier of the United States Postal Services’ local representatives a proclamation commemorating Stamp Out Hunger Day. Eagle Pass Mayor Ramsey E. Cantu presented a proclamation to representatives of the Eagle Pass Postal Office and thanked them for their yearly efforts to pick up non-perishable food donations for this worthy cause.

On Saturday, May 11, carriers and volunteers will collect the food and then deliver it to local food banks and pantries.

The Postal Carriers food drive has collected more than 1.6 billion pounds of food since it started. The National Association of Letter Carriers' “Stamp Out Hunger” Campaign is the largest one-day food drive in the nation, collecting more than 70 million pounds of food each year.

While all non-perishable donations are welcome, foods that are high in protein like canned tuna, salmon, beans and peanut butter are the most needed. Canned fruits and vegetables, whole grain, low sugar cereals, macaroni and cheese dinners, and 100% fruit juice also top the list of most needed items.
