What was supposed to be a flourishing haven for children had been turned into a mountain of tires that housed vermin and an infestation of mosquitoes a mere 30 feet from homes and even a church. Thousands of tires littered the VFW Park along Crane St.
Residents of the Chula Vista Subdivision were subjected to such hazard for many years.
Maverick County under the direction of Commissioner Jerry Morales and County Judge David Saucedo took action and cleaned up the park, removing the used tires, eliminating the health and environmental hazards.
The County then proceeded to work in the park and returned it to a usable area for the community to enjoy.
In January of this year, the Commissioners Court voted in favor of installing a new playground set at VFW Park. In March the new playground was installed.
Commissioner Morales has also been able to add in lighting and restored a baseball field at the park adding an office space that is used to house different events and programs throughout the year.
The County Road and Bridge Department also completed the construction of an outdoor basketball court at the VFW Park.
Pct. 1 Commissioner Jerry Morales was not available for comment on what the question of ownership means and what is going on at this point with the rescued park area.
