The Eagle Pass City Council ordered city administration to start negotiating a new fire and emergency services contract with Maverick County.

The issue has been brewing for quite some time as discussions over the topic have been had for numerous years including an outstanding debt by the county to the city in previous years.

That debt was eventually paid off and now the city appears to be wanting to negotiate the Fire and EMS Protection contract including the amount paid for such services.

The Eagle Pass City Council held a meeting on Monday, August, 20 in which the issue was discussed in executive session.

Once back in open session Eagle Pass Mayor Ramsey. E. Cantu opened up the item for a motion.

A motion was made to authorize the administration to move forward and begin negotiations with Maverick County over a new Fire Protection Services Contract. Provided to the residents outside of the incorporated city limits that reside within the County of Maverick.

City Council voted in favor of moving forward with what was agreed to do.

City Councilman Billy Davis wasn’t present at the meeting.

The City will begin to negotiate an inter-local agreement contract with Maverick County for Fire Protection Services.

Recently the Eagle Pass City Council were notified by the Eagle Pass Fire department that they are short staffed and would be requesting to hire more personnel for this coming fiscal year due to the increase of emergency calls they handle on a yearly basis.

It’s believed that the city government may want to increase the amount that Maverick County currently pays for the city to provide such services in order to assist in paying for the fire department’s new personnel and materials needed as well.

Back in July the City Council met and discussed this issue. The city government set the groundwork for negotiations on a new contract back then when they requested that City Manager Ivan Morua reach out to the County of Maverick on the issue and payments owed for this service.
