City council discussed the issue in executive session with their legal counsel.
Once back in open session Mayor Ramsey E. Cantu respectfully disagreed with the ruling but stated that the City would honor it but look for other options to continue with the positive aesthetic and environmental changes that it had on the community.
“The City remains entertaining legal options but wants to remain pro-active in protecting the environment here in the community. And would like to continue working with our business community and residents in keeping our city clean. We ask that all citizens and merchants continue doing their part. While we’re disappointed with the Supreme Courts decision, the court made it very clear that they’re only enforcing existing law,” said Cantu.
Cantu stated that the City among other communities hope that the legislature will take appropriate measures so that communities such as Eagle Pass can continue trying to protect the environment for future generations.
The continuing of non- plastic bag usage will now be on a voluntary basis while the City will continue promoting for such environmental friendly acts by all.
“We know what this ordinance brought to our city. We see a greater presence of cleanliness within our city and a more conscientious effort to be more environmentally friendly,” added Cantu.
Mayor Cantu and the City Council concurred with pushing for campaigns and efforts to continue asking the community to go green and using other options that are more environmentally friendly than plastic bags which take up to 500 years to biodegrade.
