This past weekend the San Antonio Express reported that Gutierrez faces multiple federal and state tax liens, forfeitures, and breach of contract lawsuits.
The most recent claim is recorded to have occurred on March 28 when the IRS filed a lien against him and his wife in the amount of $60,284, for unpaid taxes dating back to 2015.
Gutierrez’s legal issues don’t end there. It’s also reported that two of his businesses have incurred a tax debt of more than $10,000.
Gutierrez’s legal firm has faced at least two breach-of-contract lawsuits and two liens from the IRS totaling to $ 61,189. Those liens are reported to have been cleared up.
Gutierrez has stated that his legal issues are being resolved and blames circumstances beyond his control for many of the issues. “I’ve had as many as five lawyers that I’ve been in charge of at a time and, unfortunately, things haven’t gotten done, either through them or administrators, in the best way possible.” Gutierrez told the SA Express “We’re just trying to make it and it ain’t easy. We’ve never filed for bankruptcy and everyone’s been paid. Sometimes the tax man is the last one to get paid.”
Candidate Pete Gallegos had some choice words on Gutierrez’s situation. “Gutierrez and many others have often said that elected officials are held to a higher standard. This is why I am so disappointed to learn that, over several years’ time, he has a history of not paying taxes and breach of contract judgments, said Gallego “I’m running to improve the lives of the vulnerable and create a stronger Texas. Sometimes we struggle financially, but we pay our taxes for veterans, children, teachers, seniors, police and firefighters, and more. I hope to be a trustworthy leader on issues affecting the lives of these lifelong friends, neighbors, and heroes.”
Up to now, seven candidates have registered to run including Democrats, Roland Gutierrez, Pete Gallego, Charlie Urbina Jones and Tomas Uresti and three Republicans Pete Flores, Jay Alaniz and Carlos Antonio Raymond.
