Former Crystal City Mayor Ricardo Lopez faces sentencing on July 2

Two years after his arrest, former Mayor for Crystal City, Texas Ricardo Lopez will stand before Western District Magistrate Judge Alia Moses to face sentencing for his role in a pay for play scheme back in 2016.

 Lopez is scheduled to appear in Federal Court on Monday, July, 2 where he will face the punishment phase for bribery and theft by a public servant.   

Lopez has been incarcerated for more than 10 months and it’s probable that he will remain in custody after he hears out his sentencing. 

Last May, former Crystal City Manager William James Jonas was sentenced to 35 years in prison for his involvement in the scheme.

Two former members of the Crystal City Council were also involved in this corruption scheme and await sentencing as well. 

Jonas and Lopez were arrested and charged after a federal criminal investigation alleged that they conspired to commit bribery, conspiracy to commit wire fraud,

 federal program bribery, wire fraud charges and theft of honest services as well.  

 The other defendants are former Crystal City Mayor Pro-Tem Rogelio Mata, Councilman Roel Mata, Councilman Gilberto Urrabazo, and businessman Ngoc Tri Nguyen.
