Maverick County Sheriff Deputies were involved in a vehicle pursuit in the early morning hours of Saturday, June 23.

Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber confirmed the information and stated that his deputies attempted to pull over a van on Farm Rd. 2644 El Indio, Texas to Carrizo Springs.

Schmerber states that the driver refused to stop for law enforcement officials and proceeded to lead them on a high-speed chase.

The vehicle finally came to a stop and several subjects jumped out of the van fleeing the scene on foot. The subjects disappeared into the brush area with deputies in pursuit.

Only one individual was detained as U.S. Border Patrol continued searching for the subjects believed to be undocumented immigrants and their smuggler.

In recent weeks trafficking of undocumented immigrants has been at the forefront of local news. Various detainments of large groups of undocumented immigrants have surprised many on the realities of human smuggling along the border including Maverick County.
