The U.S. House proposed an astronomical cut to spending by $5.4 trillion over the next decade. 

Cuts would include $537 billion in cuts to Medicare and $1.5 trillion to Medicaid and other health programs.

Locally, 3,390 people receive Medicare benefits. They stand to be affected in some way or another from the $54 billion in yearly cuts. This would also jeopardize those who are in the process of going into the Medicare system. 

Maverick County currently has 15,989 people who receive Medicaid assistance. 11,128 or 70 % of those recipients are 21 years old or younger. 

People under the Medicaid program who are disabled could possibly be affected by these cuts as well.

Approximately 19,288 people in Maverick County are on some form of government medical assistance. 

This is 32 % (1/3) of the county population.  This bill is in its initial stages and requires Senate approval before it can be moved on to the President’s desk to be signed into law.

The proposed budget also seeks to slash $2.6 trillion in reductions to other mandatory spending programs, including welfare and other antipoverty programs.
