The event was held by the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, Eagle Pass Post No. 8562 and was attended by over 150 persons.
Master of Ceremonies Ruben Salazar welcomed all the Maverick County Veterans, families of fallen Veterans and guests to the solemn Memorial Day ceremony.
The ceremony proceeded with the invocation and prayer for both our fallen heroes and current military personnel. Patriotic songs were played by the Memorial Jr High band
Salazar introduced and thanked representatives of local and regional Veterans organizations, local dignitaries, Eagle Pass Police and Fire Departments for their participation.
Among the Public officials in attendance were Eagle Pass Mayor Ramsey E. Cantu, City Councilmen Luis Sifuentes and Rudy Villapando, Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber and Pct. 4 Commissioner Roberto Ruiz.
The keynote speaker was Ricardo Lopez who served our country for many years.Lopez spoke of the sacrifices made by fallen United States veterans in foreign wars while defending the liberty and democracy enjoyed by all Americans. “Honor those soldiers who gave all.”
Lopez thanked the Post for the honor of speaking and honoring our local fallen Veterans. He also urged each one of those in attendance to always remember and honor all the fallen United States Veterans as well as all the men and women serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.
The reading of the names of Maverick County Veterans who fell in all foreign wars was read as a wreath and many floral offerings were placed at the head of the fallen Maverick County Veterans monument.
The local VFW Color Guard and Firing Squad shot a 21 gun salute in honor of all Veterans. The song Taps was then played in honor and remembrance of the fallen heroes.
