Graf said that the decision to reassign Ruiz came from Superintendent Gilberto Gonzalez, who did not specify as to why.
“I got it from the superintendent, and I do not know where he got it from,” Graf said. “I was not given one (reason).”
Gonzalez was not in his office on Wednesday, according to his secretary, and could not be reached for comment.
Graf also mentioned that Ruiz was not coaching any sport at this time, and that the department would attempt to begin accepting applications for his replacement.
“He (Ruiz) has been reassigned to a teaching position there at C.C. Winn,” Graf said. “I am going to see the Human Resources Director this afternoon and we are going to try and open it (position) up.”
C.C. Winn’s football program, which began in 2006, was previously led by David Charles during its first three seasons before Ruiz took over.
Ruiz - who estimated his overall record with the Mavericks to be 9-31 – said he concurred with the superintendent’s decision.
“I agree that it was time for a change for the school, so I have no problem with it,” Ruiz said.
Ruiz also expressed his enjoyment of coaching the Mavericks for four campaigns.
“The kids were wonderful, they played hard in every game and they never gave up,” Ruiz said. “That is one of the reasons I enjoyed coaching at C.C. Winn very much. I would not trade the last four years for anything. Hopefully the new head coach will be able to help turn things around in the future and help C.C. Winn come out on top and win more games than we did this past season. I will always cheer on the Mavericks.”
Not wanting to discuss the details or the remainder of his current contract with EPISD, Ruiz said he first wants to ponder his situation with his spouse.
“I have to sit down and speak to my wife about what we are going to do,” Ruiz said. “We have not made any decisions at this point, we are just waiting to see how things go, and will discuss and decide in the near future.”
