During the beginning 4 months (Sept to Dec) of the new fiscal year there have been 91 domestic violence cases taken on by the WGWS . This averages to 23 cases per month a 64% increase per month as compared to last year.
At this rate Carolina Gonzalez of the local WGWS believes that this year’s cases will surpass last years by approximately 103 cases if the averages continue.
"The way it's going, we're more than likely going to see a big increase in victims coming through our doors. We want anyone who is a victim of domestic violence to know that we’re here to help. We also want them to know that you should not take any type of abuse and report it to law enforcement.”
Gonzalez explains that often times victims hesitate in calling police on their abusers due to fear of retaliation or other issues.
”Often times it’s not that the violence ceases but the victims become hesitant in reporting their predicament,” added Gonzalez.
Gonzalez states that one of the most important things that any of us can do is report any case that you see. “We need to help any victim get out of their situation. It will never be a good thing to stay in any type of abusive relationship.”
Last year the Winter Garden Women’s Shelter assisted 170 women and 300 children whop were all victims of a domestic violence problem.
