Over 800 AEP light customers in Eagle Pass lost electricity on Monday, some lasting several hours, facing the frigid temperatures without any power.

Different sectors of the city  began to lose power at approximately 6:30 pm and lasted well into the evening hours. The affected areas included Bibb St., Loma Bonita, Eidson Rd., La Heradura, Royal Ridge Area, Flowers Dr., Seco Mines, and Deer Run. The areas did not lose power all at once.

Eagle Pass Fire Chief Manuel Mello said the outage was attributed to the overload of electricity, caused by heaters turning on at about the same time.

“That is normal,” said Mello. “It’s just like during the summer when it’s very hot and people turn on their air conditioners, it’ll cause an overload on the system.”

Nearly two hours after the initial power outage, half of the homes that had been affected began to see their power restored. AEP continued to work throughout the evening to restore electrical power to the remainder of the homes affected.

Of the 825 locations without power, 600 homes were within city limits and 225 were located in the county area.

At approximately 8:30 p.m. the City of Eagle Pass Emergency Coordination Committee decided to open a shelter at the Multi-Purpose Center to assist those affected by the power outages.

Thousands of locations were affected by power outages across the border region, including Laredo which had almost 6,000 buildings lose power.

AEP continued to experience temporary outages on Tuesday due to the severe cold weather as well as the high demand on electrical power throughout the state.
