The American Social Health Association (ASHA) and National Cervical Cancer Coalition across the U.S designate January as Cervical Health Awareness Month. During this time women are encouraged to get screened for cervical cancer and receive the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.

While most women are aware of cervical cancer, many forget to take the steps  to detect the disease in its early stages.

Cervical Health Awareness Month is important as agencies raise awareness and teach women how they can protect themselves from HPV and cervical cancer. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted disease. It’s also a major cause of cervical cancer.

It’s estimated that approximately 78 million Americans currently have HPV which many  of whom do not know they’re infected.

The good news is that HPV can be prevented with a vaccine, and cervical cancer can often be prevented with regular screening  and follow-up care.

Cervical cancer screenings can help detect abnormal  cells early before they turn carcinogenic.  Most deaths from cervical cancer can be prevented by regular Pap Smear tests and follow-up health care.

The Maverick County Hospital District and the United Medical Centers  encourage women to receive the appropriate information on the HPV vaccine and cervical cancer.
