Eagle Pass Water Work System (EPPWS) Manager Jorge Barrera is announcing to the public that the EPWWS computer programs and server has been cleared and the Water Works System is once again taking payments with credit cards and electronic checks.

“We’ve been down maybe two or three weeks, but we’re back again just like before,” said Barrera.

EPWWS experienced technical problems and their computer systems were shut down to be cleaned out and prepared for service after they had been hacked into and breached during November and December.

The incident has been reported to and taken on by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) who are investigating the issue.

“We beefed up our security, we had an outside forensic team come in and check everything,” said Barrera. “It can happen to anybody, it’s still happening to other companies. We’ve done everything we needed to, we’ve cleaned everything out, and it should be safe again. We don’t have anything stored in terms of credit cards. It gets paid like going to anything regular store.”

The EPWWS sent out a formal notification to all EPWWS customers notifying them that their system may have been compromised by a recent security breach and that possibly sensitive personal information remained in the database at the time of the breach, including customer social security numbers, home addresses, payment information as well as employee information, telephone numbers and payroll information.

This security breach and possible theft of sensitive information could potentially affect all water works system customers and employees, including individuals who use the city's website to make a payment.

“What the company told us is that just the files were looked at, no files were actually extracted. They were able to just go in there, and look at our files but nothing was taken,” said Barrera. “We don’t know if they were able to look at some of these things and maybe write stuff down, that’s what we don’t know. We’re not even sure if any data was taken. We sent out those letters as a ‘be safe’ kind of thing. even the company said it didn’t look like they took anything, but we can’t be 100 percent. They didn’t download any files.”

If customers have concerns or questions they are welcome to contact the EPWWS at their Customer Service Department at (830)773-2351.

No descargaron ningún archivo ".
