The library is opening its doors to the public after being closed down for almost two years, due to a $3.5 million renovation and addition to the existing building.
“We’re happy to continue bringing projects to the community that will enhance our lifestyle and be there for future generations,” said Mayor Ramsey English Cantu. “The library renovation is one of those projects that we’re extremely proud of, as its a historical part of our community and will continue being so for many, many years to come.”
The Eagle Pass Public Library first opened up as the Eagle Pass Post Office in 1849, the same year Fort Duncan was established. Records show that it was designed by architect James K. Taylor. When a new postal facility opened in 1964, the existing building was converted for use as the Eagle Pass public library. It is a well-preserved example of the Renaissance revival architectural style. The Eagle Pass Public Library has existed at the building on Main Street for over 53 years.
