Large turnout at UMC Diabetes Awareness Class

   United Medical Centers hosted a Diabetes Awareness Class on Tuesday, November 21 at the International Center for Trade. 

  United Medical Centers Jessika Ramirez MR-CMA, CCHW welcomed over 90 people who attended the event.

  “On behalf of the United Medical Centers’ administration we welcome you to this very informative class where vital information will be shared and discussed,” said Ramirez. “We also want to guide you to better health and give you the knowledge of what you have to do to control this disease.” 

   Ramirez then proceeded to present the audience with information on diabetes prevention and care. 

   Ramirez went on to introduce Ms. Sonia Tovar ,Registered Nurse and Director of Nurses who also provided those in attendance with informational guides on how to deal with the disease. 

  Dr. Roberto Marquinez internal medicine also held a seminar on what diabetes is and how it affects those afflicted by it. 

   November is recognized as National Diabetes Awareness Month all across the nation. It’s during this time that an  effort of awareness is brought forth to educate millions of Americans on what diabetes is and how it negatively it can severely harm a person’s health if not managed properly. 

   Maverick County continues to see a high prevalence of diabetes, and it’s predicted to continue affecting the community greatly as Texas Health Institute studies project a more than doubling of the number of diabetes cases diagnosed within Maverick County from 2015 to 2040. Informational numbers show that approximately 14,000 people in Maverick County are diabetic or are borderline diabetics.
