The Eagle Pass City Council recently discussed the participation numbers of youth and adults that visit the different community recreational centers that the City Parks and Recreation Department run throughout the year, and how not having full proof of their actual participation can put the city in jeopardy for false claims and even lawsuits.

During their meeting held on Tuesday, November 7 the council asked various questions during the monthly departmental reports including to Parks and Rec over the accuracy of the number of visits accounted for at the centers.

Mayor Pro Tem Yolanda Ramon asked Parks and Rec Director Jorge Sanchez questions over the participation reports.

Ramon and Sanchez continued to discuss as to how the reports can be seen as inaccurate if numbers are just given without any actual backup to the claims.

Sanchez then stated that the reports are being done through the Library Department.

“I did not see that. As it did not go through us, it goes through the library,” said Sanchez.

The council then discussed the issue with the program director Mrs.Saucedo.

“For accountability purposes, there are no names, nothing, just numbers. I only see numbers so that’s why I’m asking,” said Ramon. “How do we know who signs in and comes and goes?”

Sanchez then explained how they keep track of who attends the centers including a daily check in list.

“The participants sign in at the hour that they get there and the hour that they leave,” said Sanchez.

Ramon and administration continued their talk over her concerns as to the city’s accountability, and how the governing entity can protect itself from false claims such as supposed injuries at city owned centers, that in actuality could have occurred elsewhere.

“I just want to assure that there is some accountability and assure that the city is safeguarded,” concluded Ramon.

The council asked that the list with the names be presented through the centers monthly departmental reports.
