The Eagle Pass City Council held a meeting on Tuesday, November 7 in which they were approached by longtime baseball league coordinator Francisco Galan over an issue he sought to  rectify with the city council and administration over the consumption of alcoholic beverages in the parks where games are held.

“We are here to try to clear up issues with various ordinances and how they’re now affecting our leagues and attendance to those games. In total we have 19 male teams and 19 female teams. We are seeking to clear up to have the proper permits for alcoholic beverages,” said Galan. “Many of the teams gather after the games in the park areas and cookout, and often have a refreshment to go with their food, ut we feel that we’re being signaled out and would like to clear up this issue.”

Galan continued to explain the issues the league is having, and asked city council for assistance.

“Back in 2008 I was given a letter where they gave me permission to allow alcoholic beverages in the area of play as long as it was done responsibly. Why is it now that we’re being told that we can’t have them anymore? I’ve been told that it’s under an ordinance that we can’t. Well I hadn’t been notified of this,”  said Galan.

Mayor Ramsey E. Cantu then asked Mr.Galan if he had brought up the issue with city administration or the city manager, and if the issue was over alcoholic beverages being consumed in the parks.

Mr. Galan answered yes, and that he had some communication with the city administration but would like for everyone to come together and allow for his request to be heard.

Mayor Cantu added that he felt that the issue needed to be carefully looked at, and a decision would be made.
