The game began with Southside on offense due to the Mavericks deferring on the opening kickoff, but a good run by Southside running back Eddie Perez was stopped by News Gram Player of the Week Azael Rodriguez on a fantastic open-field tackle to force a third and long on thier first offensive sequence. And after a screen pass to Perfecto Doria, the Cardinals were forced to punt.
A three and out brought on Villaseñor who punted to the Southside 39 then a nice strip by #46 Ricardo Morales on a read option keeper gave the ball right back to the Mavs who took advantage of the gift first on a complete pass to Justice Roiz, then a first down by QB Ethan Johnston then a pitch and catch from Johnston to Jose Blanco for 30 yards put the Mavericks in business on the two yard line! Then it was Johnston on the read option reverse fake for the TD. The Ernesto Fuentes PAT was good 7-0 Mavericks.
But the Cardinals would strike back and strike quickly after a crucial fumble by the Mavericks gave them possession at the 45 yard line followed by a 55 yard screen pass to Michael Hernandez for a touchdown to tie the game at seven.
The Mavericks started at their own 22 then another turnover hurt them when a Johnston pass was picked off by defensive back Victor Rodriguez. This play set up a nice pump fake followed by a 35 yard strike from QB Alejandro Escamilla to Wide Receiver Damien Castillo to put the Crimson and Black up 14-7.
Villaseñor pinned the Cardinals back at their one yard line with 6:27 remaining in the half. Alejandro Jimenez had a nice hit behind the line of scrimmage forcing a punt returned to the 24 by Xavier Cerezo which led to a beautiful pass to tight end Isaac Villarreal for the Maverick touchdown.
But the Cardinals would strike yet again before the half with a pass to RB Eddie Perez to put the visitors up 21-14 at the break.
A fumble by the Cardinals which was recovered by German Velasquez put the Mavericks in scoring position in the second half. Johnston would get seven on a keeper then a personal foul on a late hit by Southside moved the ball to the Cardinal 25 and after a keeper by Johnston, a pass to Jared Roiz and another run by the QB, Johnston was able to take it in followed by a two point conversion to put the Mavericks up 22-21.
The Cards struck back with an excellent pitch and catch to Dylan Silva for 40 yards all the way to the Maverick 20 then it was Perez to the two yard line followed by another plunge by Perez into the end zone for the score. The PAT was no good, wide right making the score 27-22 Southside.
The Mavericks would drive, taking critical minutes off the clock and culminating with a score by Johnston to put the Mavericks up 28-27 with 1:31 remaining in the game, but the two point conversion, a reverse pass from Luis Olvera to Justice Roiz was intercepted and no good.
The first play from scrimmage on the ensuing drive, a hook and lateral by Southside was apparently fumbled and recovered by the Mavericks to seal the deal and give the Mavs their second straight district win, but the officials deliberated for a good three minutes until deciding that the pass was incomplete giving the Cardinals new life which they took advantage of as they drove down the field and then a pass bounces off Brandon Wheeler and falls into the hands of JJ Garcia, but the INT is waved off due to interference and a last second field goal by Eric Elizondo, a 36 yarder, went right through the uprights with room to spare to give the Cardinals the victory 30-28.
