The event was attended by over 75 people and took place at the UMC clinic on Veterans Blvd. from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Jessika Ramirez, head advocate for UMC, welcomed all in attendance and gave information on the disease and where cancer screenings were available.
Ramirez presented Sonia Tovar, Head Nurse for United Medical Centers who proceeded to give a presentation on breast cancer and the preventive measures that can be taken such as self checks or consultation with a medical doctor.
“This disease is more common in women but men can also develop it as well,” said Tovar. “Breast cancer is the number one killer of all cancers in Hispanic women.”
UMC then acknowledged a group of cancer survivors who were in attendance .
“We all have had a loved one or someone we know deal or go through this disease. Statistics show that one out of eight women in the U. S. will develop breast cancer,” added Tovar.
Ramirez then presented Patricia Munoz of UMC who gave a presentation on self examination, Lourdes Perez and Sarah Moody from the Fort Duncan Regional Medical Centers who gave out information on mammograms and other assistance that the FDRMC has available for breast cancer checkups.
UMC Coordinator of Nursing Services Irene Martinez also spoke on her battle with cancer and gave an insight as to what one goes through.
“I have many titles,” said Martinez. “I’m a nurse, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, but most importantly I am a breast cancer survivor because if I was not a survivor I could not be any of the things that I have mentioned. I deeply express to you all the importance of self examinations and checkups.”
