The training is designed for law enforcement officers and will focus on the legal issues of stopping vehicles, dealing with the driver and passengers, as well as the legal requirements and limits on the officer’s ability to search. Topics will include: extending detentions in order to bring a drug detection dog tot he scene; consent to search; searching a vehicle incident to arrest; searching a vehicle with probable cause; and searching the occupants of a vehicle. In addition, “pretext stops” and “pretext arrest,” as well as “walling off” information that preceded a traffic stop and search will be covered.
Presenters include Harris County District Attorney’s Office Retired Prosecutors Ted Wilson and Craig Goodhart.
This course is eligible for 7 hours TCOLE credit #3150.
There will also be a half-day training course on traffic stops and the law on Wednesday, November 8, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the ICT Center.

The instructor will also give examples of fact situations and focus on developing the officer’s ability to articulate “reasonable suspicion” regarding legal concerns.
