Coach Apolinar Garza said his charges stepped up their game when facing some pretty stiff competition at the meet which continues to grow each year.
“Overall I think our kids did very well," said Garza, "The meet itself was a very strong meet. Eagle Pass is outstanding, as are the Laredo school and the Valley schools that come to our community each year. They're all very tough and I think our kids were very competitive against them."
Standout Yoshio Limon placed in the Top 20 and teammates Diego Jimenez and Ricardo Garcia both came in the Top 25.
"We can look forward to big things from our varsity boys this season," added Garza who mentioned that the Mavericks are coming off a Runner-Up finish at the District 29-AAAAA Meet last year. "We have most of our boys coming back from a runner-up team, so we're expecting them to do well this year."
Coach Garza also mentioned that he has a young but enthusiastic group of girls who are working hard to represent their school as well.
"They're coming along,” said Garza.
He mentioned Dari Rios and Arlene Herrera as standouts, and was proud to announce that Becky Villarreal placed first in the JV Division on Saturday.
In reference to the dual meet on Thursday, Garza had the following to add, "We had some pretty hot weather, but we dealt with it real well. It is especially important that we run in this type of weather this week because Corpus Christi is similar and that's where the 2017 Regional Meet will be held."
Garza wished to thank many people including city administration, as well as golfers, for allowing the meet to be held at the golf course.
“It really means a lot to me and the kids to be able to run here,” said Garza. “This is an extremely excellent place to run."
Mavericks Cross Country will next face competition at the Islander’s Splash Meet in Corpus Christi on September 22nd and 23rd.
“It's a really big event with a Gold Division and then 6A and 5A divisions," said Garza.
