When you talk about a family from Texas who has impacted high school football, NCAA football and even the pro level, it is rare to find one like the Detmers.

Father Sonny Detmer, a Hall of Fame coach, who led both the Southwest High School Dragons and the Mission Eagles deep into the playoffs; his brother, Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer, who experienced grand success at the collegiate level at BYU where he is presently BYU's offensive coordinator, and at the pro level with several NFL teams including the Philadelphia Eagles, Detroit Lions and Atlanta Falcons; and current Mission High School Head Coach Coy Detmer who also played at Colorado, as well as with the NFL's Eagles, are all highly successful coaches.

Coy is in his eighth season as a head coach after a stint in Somerset where he played the Mavs, and his second year coaching the Eagles who will host the CC Winn Mavericks this Friday evening in Sharyland. He was full of praise for what Eric Villaseñor has been able to accomplish in his short tenure at Winn High.

"First of all, they went deep into the playoffs last season, they're a team that play hard, hustle, they're well-coached," said Coy. "You can tell that has gotten his kids to buy into the program and play well within their offensive and defensive schemes."

The Eagles will try to stop the Maverick offense with a defense led by senior LB Steven De Leon (6' 0", 220 Lbs.), Senior DL Victor Gutierrez (6' 0", 205 Lbs.), Senior Sean De La Garza and Senior CB Mike Delva.

On offense the border birds rely on the strength of freshman RB Andrew Maldonado.

"Strong kid," says Coy. "He's a good combination of strength and speed, especially for his age and grade."

He also mentioned WR Sebastian Gonzalez, who scored on a 20 yard pass against rival Mission Veterans, and sophomore QB Damian Gomez, who also scored on a one-yard plunge in the rivalry which the Eagles lost 14 to 19.

Although Coy is looking ahead toward the games his team has coming up, he was nostalgic about his exploits as the quarterback for his father's Eagle team that advanced to the State Semi-Finals where they fell to Houston Aldine: the #1 HS football team in the nation in 1990.

"We were a proud team and scored twenty points on them, but they were at another level and beat us pretty bad,” said Coy. “Sometimes you run into teams deep in the playoffs that can really play, but we're looking forward to our game against Winn this week."
