The public is invited to the RGC campus in Uvalde on Friday, September 15 at 11:15 a.m. to celebrate the unveiling of the remarkable images that will be on display in a poster exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, in partnership with the U.S. Geological Survey. Plan to stay for a short reception immediately following the presentation. The display is RGC’s opening event for Sul Ross State University’s Centennial Celebration, commemorating 100 years of research, culture, and academics.
For those unable to attend the opening, the exhibition will be on view at RGC through Friday, October 13. It will then be moved to the Eagle Pass campus from October 16 through November 15, and finally to the Del Rio location for display from November 20 through December 15. In Uvalde, the self-guided tour will be available from 10 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Fridays. Special showings are available for groups of 10 or more. Please contact Laura Nelson at 830-279-3040 or via email at This email address is being protected from spambots. The 20-poster set, printed in both English and Spanish, features beautifully detailed satellite images of the planet—from the swirling arms of a massive hurricane and the grid-like pattern of Kansas farmland to the triangular shadows cast by the Great Pyramids and the sinuous channels entering the Arctic Ocean. “Earth from Space” illustrates how satellite imagery is gathered and used to expand mankind’s understanding of life on Earth. It also explores the remote-sensing technology used to gather the images and describes the individual satellites whose images are on display.
The poster exhibition was born of the popular and award-winning museum exhibition of the same title that premiered November 2006 at the National Air and Space Museum. In 2007, “Earth from Space” won a U.S. Geological Survey communications award for science content.
An educational companion Web site, www.earthfromspace.si.edu, contains an online version of the exhibition, and additional images and information. It also provides numerous educational resources, including lesson plans, classroom activities, Web site links and available publications.
The RGC family hopes you will join us to observe the Sul Ross Centennial and be amazed by the beautiful imagery of Earth on display.
