The Maverick County Sheriff Department and Constables from Precinct 3AB responded to an animal welfare concern call at approximately 4:00 pm on Monday, July 24.

The caller reported two horses that appeared to be in very bad condition in an empty lot within the 2700 block of Del Rio Boulevard.

Law enforcement officials found the horses without any water. The officials proceeded to check up on the horses and provide water.

Sheriff Deputies and Constable took notes of the conditions in which the horses were found and  attempted to find the owners.

Animal cruelty occurs often in the community. Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber has stated that such neglect is unacceptable and that animal cruelty will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

The Texas Penal Code 42.092 Cruelty to Nonlivestock Animals is a Class A misdemeanor, except if the person has previously been convicted two times under this section then it becomes a state jail felony under section 42.09.
