Chief of Staff Ivan Morua who presented the proclamation, Parks and Recreation Director Jorge Sanchez, Assistant Parks and Recreation Director Rosy Aguirre, and stars of the month Deandra Rodriguez and J.J. Ballesteros were present to celebrate the event.
“During the month of July, the whole United States celebrates Parks and Recreation Month. When we maintain our parks and recreation activities, we help to fight obesity, we protect open space and natural resources, and we provide many different activities,“ said Recreation Supervisor Juan Cuellar. “This July we’re celebrating the power of play, meaning we need to get outdoors and play. Right now, 74 percent of children are not getting enough daily exercise. That’s where we come in.The City of Eagle Pass Parks and Recreation along with the Mayor’s Fitness Council is going to provide opportunities for all of you.”
Cuellar notified the public that the department will be hosting Parks and Recreation Celebration on July 27; an outdoor event with opportunities to participate in activities like volleyball and basketball, and will feature live music and food stalls.
A new program scheduled to begin in August called Rec on the Go will also give locals more chances to exercise outside. The program will bring recreational supplies and activities to parks, including supplies to play flag football, volleyball, and basketball.
The department is also days away from purchasing an outdoor cinema screen to provide outdoor movie night to be held at the public swimming pool. The Fitness in the Park events will continue as well.
Parks and Recreation Director Jorge Sanchez took the time to thank his staff for all that they do.
“Without their hardwork and dedication it would be impossible for us to do what we do in order for us to make our community a great place to live,” said Sanchez.
