After almost a year of fighting for a tax rate rollback election, one of the most vocal members of the group known as the Concerned Maverick County Taxpayers, Ethelvina Felan is addressing the community about the County’s continued push back.

In a letter to the public, Felan writes that instead of simply having the election, the County continues to waste money on legal fees to appeal the court’s order for an election.

The letter reads as follows:

Dear Citizens of Maverick County,

From the beginning of this property tax rollback case, the County Judge and Commissioner’s Court have contended that they did as the law requires. They admit that they made several mistakes, but that there was nothing they could do.  Well, now that is certainly not the case.

District Judge Kirkendall has ruled that the rollback property tax rate was exceeded and that there were enough valid signatures on the tax rollback petition. The court has ordered Maverick County to hold an election to let the people decide, yet this decision was appealed.

The law is now requiring the County Judge along with Commissioner's Court to hold an election, so the decision to appeal is completely up to them and no one else’s.  Maverick County has already wasted over $33,000 in legal fees fighting this case and it is apparent by their actions that Commissioner's Court is willing to waste even more taxpayer's money to fight the democratic process. All that Maverick County citizens are asking is to let the people decide if they want Maverick County to keep the tax rate approved. Let people vote for what they see fit. Let us not forget that it should be a government that reflects the will of the people.
