A 2016 Lexus fell into the Rio Grande River near the ramp at Shelby Park after the driver claimed to have accidentally reversed too far early Friday morning.
Sheriff Tom Schmerber said the driver said he was enjoying a drive near the river at approximately 12:30 a.m. when he got too close, reversed, and landed his car in the water.
Maverick County Deputies and Eagle Pass Fire Department responded to the call, and found the vehicle upside down. Schmerber said the driver was not intoxicated, and was able to get out of the car before it was completely in the river.
Martinez Wrecking Service attempted to remove the vehicle from the water, but was unable to after a piece of machinery broke.
“I think it’s still there in the river still because nobody wanted to take it out. They don’t have the equipment to take the vehicle out,” said Schmerber. The vehicle was still in the river at press time.
