The City of Eagle Pass Parks and Recreation Department will be hosting a Stars & Stripes 5K Color Run and Walk on July 2.

The event will take place at the San Juan Plaza where registration will open at 6:00 p.m. with a fee of $10 per person, or $5 for students. The 5k will begin at 7:00 p.m., and a one mile run for children will take place at the same time.

The school with the most participants will receive a trophy and free meal coupons, prizes will be given to the participant with the most patriotic attire, and medals will be given to all participants. The top three runners will receive cash prizes.

Children ages 6 to 12 also have the summer youth program to look forward to. From June 12 to August 4, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, students can participate in a variety of activities at four different recreation centers Loma De La Cruz, Roy P. Benavides, San Luis, or the Multipurpose Center for $30 a week.

Recreation Supervisor Juan Cuellar said this year the 8 week program will be changing almost completely, with educational curriculum being added to itineraries, not just sports. Each week will also be given a theme; art week, STEM week, community involvement week, nature and stars and stripes week, for example.

“We changed practically everything to make sure the children have some learning throughout the camp instead of just participating in sports,” said Cuellar. “We’re trying to make sure we split the time  between recreation and learning.”

Each week will feature guest speakers and presentations, prizes, pool visits, and more.

Cuellar said the upcoming school year will also be filled with exciting new events including an elementary spelling bee and science fair. The City of Eagle Pass will even be sponsoring one student to attend the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

For more information on any of the upcoming events, or for pre-registration for the Color Run, please call the Parks and Recreation Department at 830-773-4343.
