A Cuban national, arrested by Del Rio Sector  U.S. Border Patrol agents a year ago for smuggling undocumented immigrants, was recently sentenced to federal prison.

“The U.S. Border Patrol takes the crime of human smuggling very seriously.” said Del Rio Sector Acting Chief Patrol Agent Matthew J. Hudak. “I commend all of the agents involved for their diligent hard work that secured a conviction in this case.”

On May 25, 2016, Dimmit County Sheriff’s deputies requested Border Patrol assistance with a vehicle stop involving human smuggling. The driver, Yirandy Rosales Almaral, 36, was arrested by Border Patrol agents for smuggling two undocumented immigrants from Mexico. All three subjects were transported to the Carrizo Springs Station for processing, pursuant to CBP guidelines.

Almaral, originally from Cuba, was charged with three counts of alien smuggling. He was tried by a jury before U.S. District Judge Alia Moses in Del Rio, in December 2016. Almaral was found guilty on all charges and, on May 23, was sentenced to 16 months imprisonment.
