Administrators, coaches, teammates, friends and family were there to support Defensive Tackle, Running Back, and Kicker Carlos Tijerina as he signed his letter of intent with Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas.
“It’s been a great year, and there’s no better way to end the last day of school than with one of our own signing on to play at the next level,” said C.C. Winn Head Football Coach Eric Villaseñor.
Principal Jesus Diaz-Wever and Vice Principal Matthew Uriegas congratulated Tijerina on his accomplishment, and wished him the best in his future endeavors.
“This is a true indication of hard work, commitment, and willingness to play at a higher level,” said Diaz-Wever. “When you are committed to a program what you need to do is excel in whatever you do, and that’s what Carlos did these past four years. I know he’s going to do his very best.”
Tijerina’s Position Coach JJ Iracheta was among those extremely proud of the student athlete.
“Carlos is just a great person. I know he has a big heart, and he’s going to do the right thing and take advantage of the opportunity he was given,” said Iracheta. “We were lucky enough to experience an athlete like Carlos. I don’t think, at least not in my playing days or coaching days, have I seen an athlete of his caliber.
I think we were spoiled as coaches and as fans. We’ll never see another Carlos Tijerina, at least not for a long time; who is strong, fast, can jump, can throw. We’ll be keeping track of your career now at the collegiate level, make us proud and don’t forget the basics, always do the right thing, and most importantly get that education. Congratulations Carlos, we love you.”
Tijerina’s mother, Maria, was next to speak. She thanked everyone for their support, especially his coaches and teachers, and shared how proud she was of her son.
Tijerina spoke last, thanking everyone for pushing him to do his best, and believing him even when he didn’t believe in himself.
“I hope I can make you all proud and come back and do some good in the community,” said Tijerina. “Go Mavericks!”
The ceremony finished with the traditional “nail in the coffin” chant led by Tijerina.
