The month kicked off with a proclamation from the City of Eagle Pass on May 2 in which May was declared Teenage Pregnancy Prevention Month. The Better Futures Forever Youth Group was later honored by Congressman Will Hurd on May 4 for their work in the community. The Juntos Podemos Program also recognized participating schools within EPISD.
The main event for the month was the Save the Teens event, an opportunity for parents and children to come together to discuss teen pregnancy prevention, bullying, and drug and alcohol abuse among other problems teens might face, and where to find help.
Juntos Podemos, along with the City of Eagle Pass and other organizations, held a preteen and teen parent conference that offered sessions to students and their parents from Eagle Pass, the Kickapoo Tribe, and Piedras Negras with the goal for the community and surrounding areas to grow and raise awareness to empower the youth to help them make responsible choices.
The month ended with Juntos Podemos hosting Cuidate Program sessions at C.C. Winn High School and Eagle Pass High School, not only to provide students with the education to prevent teenage pregnancy, but also to give students the opportunity to win a $250 scholarship to continue their education.
