City Secretary Imelda B. Rodriguez then proceeded to perform the customary official Oath of Office to the newly re-elected officers.
First to take his oath of office was Councilman Luis Sifuentes, who afterwards addressed over 150 people in the audience.
Sifuentes thanked his opponent Romeo Fernandez for participating in the electoral process and allowing him to revisit constituents, and see and hear many concerns among the community members.
“We need to take notice and try to do what we can as city council to address those issues,” said Sifuentes. “It’s very difficult to serve without the love and support of my wife and children. I want to thank them because they sacrifice their time for me to be up here and I thank you.”
Mayor Pro Tem Rudy Villalpando was then sworn in and he thanked the hid family, audience and voters for their support.
“I was thinking that at this age I need to appreciate much serving my community more,” said Villalpando. “I am very proud of serving Eagle Pass and all of you.”
Villalpando then thanked his wife for always supporting him through his life and career.
Mayor Cantu was then sworn in on what will also be his final four year term. He addressed all those in attendance and thanked his family and the community for their endless support.
“I want to dedicate this to my mother and my cousin Walter who is not here with us, but he is in spirit. This one is for you,” said Cantu. “I stand strong to my commitment to this community and thank you, our public officials for being here. It’s important to work together to make things happen. It’s not about the city, or Maverick County, or the EPISD; it’s about all of us making a difference for each one of our citizens, together.”
City Council then proceeded to take action and vote for the Mayor Pro Tem position which is designated for the person who conducts meetings in the absence of the city Mayor. The City Council voted for Yolanda Ramon as the new Mayor Pro Tem under City Councilwoman Gloria Hernandez’s motion.
