The city was able to obtain an $800,000 CDBG grant for the proposed Burr Park Gymnasium Project.
Powell addressed council and presented details of the schematic design and preliminary plans of the facility including land acquisition, utilities and other vital elements needed before they can proceed.
“You have to consider so many things, like pedestrian traffic. You have the skate park right there so those such things are taken into consideration in planning,” said Powell.
Powell, Mayor Cantu, and Eagle Pass Grants Administrator Isaak T. Ruiz then had a discussion in regards to the actual grant and the time frame set for the city to use the funding and complete the proposed project including any modifications to what is being considered.
Ruiz was asked by the Junior Council if there were deadlines in place to take full advantage of the grant.
“Yes there is and they’re mapped out by the Texas Department of Agriculture. They’re a little bit flexible but if you don’t take care of them on time, you risk losing funding,” said Ruiz.
Ruiz explained that the time frame allowed was approximately three years, and notified the council that as of right now everything is on schedule.
Powell showed diagram plans of the proposed facility which will be 13,630 square feet. The facility will have seating for approximately 300 spectators, and under the grant specifications will also serve as an emergency center for the community.
The City of Eagle Pass is planning to begin construction of the facility as soon as possible, and have approved the securing of certain lands in the Burr Park area to commence.
Powell estimates that groundbreaking could occur by September 1, 2017 with an eight month construction schedule.
