The subject of the essay was, “What’s the best part about living in Eagle Pass, and if you had the opportunity to be Mayor for a day what would you do?”
The essays were then judged by a committee of citizen’s on Saturday April 29, at the Dia De Los Niños celebration held at the Eagle Pass Children Library.
Present for the celebration were Eagle Pass Mayor Ramsey E. Cantu, Councilwoman Gloria Hernandez, Councilman Luis Sifuentes, Falcon Bank Regional President Sammy Juve, and local attorney Cecilia Mascorro.
Mayor Cantu proceeded to announce the five essay winners.
“Today they will be recognized and they will also have the opportunity this Tuesday to take part at our city council meeting alongside myself and the entire city council,” said Cantu.
The winner for City Council member place No.1 was Alexia Mendoza from Glass Elementary, Council Place No. 2 Alexis D. Balboa from Perfecto Mancha Elementary, Council Place No. 3 Jose M. Barbuena, Council Place No. 4 Lilia S. Olivo from Perfecto Mancha Elementary, and Glass Elementary student Laura M. Bernal was named Mayor.
“I want it to be known that she is the first female Mayor of the City of Eagle Pass,” said Cantu.
Mayor Laura M. Bernal gave her first interview to the Eagle Pass News Gram, in which she addressed what she would like to see the community focus on.
“I think improving education opportunities would help our community grow and prosper,” said Bernal.
